room 11 – LOOKING UPWARDS

PLAY AUDIO GUIDE

Half human beings are made of letters that rise up from the ground to take shape and meaning, welding themselves to each other. Raised black sheets seem to be able to stop this magnetic composition, while making it possible and allowing the letters to rest. The silhouettes in the composition seem to seek each other out and look upwards together. Against a black background they read an extract from Leopardi’s Operette morali (1827) as a last, desperate attempt to resist the senseless anguish of the human condition.

“With the dissolution of the planets, the earth, the sun and the stars, but not of their matter, new creatures will be formed from this, divided into new genera and new species, and throught the eternal forces of matter new orders of things will be born, and a new world.”
